PyraStop: Fire Preventive Solutions

 

Thermoplastic polymers are modified to improve fire resistance by blending with flame retardant (FR) materials.  It is widely accepted that the ideal FR solution would be for the thermoplastic polymer to be inherently fire-resistant.  This can be accomplished by

  1. Modifying the polymer structure (e.g. Kevlar)

  2. Compounding the resin with an FR polymer would be

  • Compatible with the host polymer

  • Stable – thermal, chemical, and mechanical - at the processing (fiber forming) conditions

  • Cost-effective - achieve FR efficiency at low levels (10 – 15%)

Even the most efficient non-halogenic fire-retardant solutions in the market today have limitations as they are vulnerable to leaching and blooming.  This is because the fire-retardant solutions are all small molecules in a giant polymeric host and have a much higher volatility than the host polymer. The kinetic energy of the FR molecules results in their blooming to the surface and evaporation or interacting with solvent molecules and leaching out.  Both result in loss of FR activity of the host polymer over time.

PyraStop PyraCat™ family of FR polymers addresses this weakness of conventional FR compounded polymers, by melt blending it with the polymer using a compounding extrusion process.  The formed by this melt-mixed blend would have the polymeric chains of the host polymer co-mingled or entangled with the polymeric chains of our FR polymer.  Additionally, being a polymer, PyraCat has low volatility and lower leaching propensity.  

 

Our innovative polymer sets a new industry standard for enhancing fire prevention along with long-term sustainability.
